Generally this file is used to keep search engines and spiders out of various parts of your site. Recently, some smart people on the internet have noticed search engines and spiders are also looking for a sitemap file as well.
You can put http://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml in the robots.txt along with your typical Disallow: /administrator/.
