Writely.com – Excellent (free) online Word Processor and Collaboration tool..

I have been doing the rounds lately with trying out the latest web
2.0 sites (there are many!) and stumbled across a couple of goodies!
The first one which i have found invaluable to our everyday business is
Writely.com. Its free to sign up, though they will
be offering a paid version later, which will include a load of new
features. You can upload your current word documents, create new ones
and collaborate with other people. We use it mostly to have a central
document that we can keep track of any ideas we have while working on
projects and find it alot easier than having our clients mail us back
and forth with new ideas, that are outside of the current scope of the
project. This way we dont loose track of our collective ideas. The
interface is incredibly easy to use and anyone who has ever used word
(even those who havent) will find creating, managing and sharing docs a
breeze!

Here are a couple of the cool features i can think of off the top of my head:
– Upload or Email-In your existing word docs
– Star and Tag docs
– Publish docs so they are viewable by anyone (with preview option)
– Post direct to your blog
– Collaborate docs (share) and let collaborators update (or not)
– See if anyone else is editing the same doc
– Compare revisions
– Save as PDF
– All the normal text formating tools
– Email when updates are made

These are but to name a few.. check it out a Writely.com to see the rest for yourself ;0)

  1. You should also check out SSuite Office for a free word processor. It has almost all the features of Word, and looks and works the same. {except for the ribbons}. Their word processor is called WordGraph.

It is only 12 MB in size. Nice and small :) . Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source software, so it makes their software very small and efficient.
